the presenting of palm wine
Igba nkwu is the traditional marriage ceremony of the Igbo people. It is the day two families come together, in the presence of elders, kindred and friends, to bless the union of their children and to welcome one another into a new family.
At its heart is a gesture of great beauty. Traditionally, the bride carries a cup of palm wine through the gathering and offers it to the man she has chosen. When he drinks, the union is sealed before the whole community.
Customs differ from one family and community to the next, and every household honours the rites in its own way. What remains constant is the meaning: a marriage is a bond between families, celebrated with dignity, colour and joy.
